On 14 May, students from the Centro Lasalle in Havana graduated from a year-long course in business skills. The course trains people on how to set up and run private businesses and aims to help young Cubans take advantage of opportunities offered by recent economic changes in Cuba.

As part of the presentation students presented their new business ideas – covering everything from restaurants to scuba diving to IT repairs – which they have developed during the course and which they hope to turn into reality.

The initiative is supported by the British Embassy in Havana. Rhys Patrick, Second Secretary at the British Embassy, who attended the event, said:

“Supporting private business is vital to fostering growth, development and jobs. By promoting entrepreneurship and innovation, and giving young Cubans the tools they need to establish and run their own businesses, this project is doing just that. The students at Centro Lasalle are producing some fantastic proposals. I hope to see their products and services in stores soon, and at the heart of the Cuban economy”
