Embassy flags are being flown at half-mast

The British Ambassador to Japan, Mr Tim Hitchens, is attending a national memorial service in Tokyo, while the British Embassy Tokyo will observe a one minute silence at 14:46 and flags are being flown at half-mast in remembrance of those who lost their lives, their loved ones and their homes.

Ambassador Hitchens said:

Two years on from 11 March 2011, the disaster’s impact is still being felt; 15881 dead, 2668 missing and 315196 homeless.

Today we honour the memory of not only the many victims, but of those who worked – and continue to work - so selflessly to support the recovery efforts in Tohoku and beyond. While we will never forget the events of that day, I have been touched by the resilience and determination of those most severely devastated. It is inspiring to see the progress that has already been made and the British community in Japan stands ready and committed to continuing its support in rebuilding the towns and lives of those affected.
