25 November: International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in Russia
It has been estimated that domestic violence causes the death of a woman in Russia every hour.
There is significant public tolerance of domestic violence, which is seen as a private matter rather than a crime. The British Consulate General in Ekaterinburg and the British Embassy in Moscow are supporting the Ekaterina Crisis Centre for women and children in helping to raise awareness locally and to educate healthcare and legal professionals.
Working with a UK partner, the Haven Centre in Wolverhampton, and with contributions from the Consulate and Embassy, the Ekaterina Centre has been providing assistance to the victims of domestic violence for over 15 years. The Centre is currently working on a project that brings together different law-enforcement departments and agencies to increase coordination and to provide increased support to victims.
Supporting women’s rights will continue to be a priority for the UK Government’s human rights work in Russia.
