Section 1: Key messages

  • TIFF in the North East in 2022 was £258 million, an increase of £42 million (19%) from 2021.

  • Total crop output in the North East in 2022 was £365 million, an increase of £106 million (41%) from 2021.

  • Total livestock output in the North East in 2022 was £456 million, an increase of £44 million (11%) from 2021.

  • Total intermediate consumption in the North East in 2022 was £539 million, an increase of £94 million (21%) from 2021.

2.1 Overview

  • Total livestock output has made the biggest contribution to outputs and subsidies in the North East in each of the past 6 years, contributing at least 42%. In 2022 Total livestock output contributed 43% of the £1,069 million total outputs and subsidies, the 5th highest proportion of the past 6 years.

  • Direct payments have made up between 13% and 20% of the total outputs and subsidies in the past 6 years for the North East. In 2022, Direct payments made up 13% of total outputs and subsidies.

  • The largest crop output in the North East in 2022 was Wheat with a value of £149 million, an increase of £52 million (53%) from 2021.

  • The largest increase in a value in the North East in 2022 was also in Wheat. The second largest increase was in Barley, increasing by £23 million (52%) from 2021 to £66 million in 2022.

  • The largest decrease in a value in the North East in 2022 was in Other crop products, decreasing by £11 million (-28%) from 2021 to £27 million in 2022.

  • The largest livestock output in the North East in 2022 was Beef with a value of £126 million, which was an increase of £13 million (12%) from 2021.

  • The largest decrease in a value in the North East in 2022 was in Eggs, decreasing by £4 million (-33%) from 2021 to £8 million in 2022.

  • The largest intermediate consumption in the North East in 2022 was Animal feed with a value of £166 million, this was an an increase of £38 million (29%) from 2021.

  • The largest value increase in a cost in the North East in 2022 was also in Animal feed. The second largest increase was in Fertilisers and soil improvers which increased by £31 million (85%) from 2021 to £68 million in 2022.

  • The largest value decrease in a cost in the North East in 2022 was in Other goods and services which decreased by £3 million (-3%) from 2021 to £84 million in 2022.
