Details

This year, the Taking Part survey included questions related to gambling and lotteries, including participation in National Lottery games and society lotteries.

Headline findings

  • 44% of adults had played a National Lottery game in the last 12 months
  • 15% of adults had played a society lottery in the last 12 months
  • 17% of adults had bet on sports in the last 12 months
  • There were differences in the likelihood of having played a National Lottery game with the demographic categories of age, ethnicity, region, gender, employment status, tenure and urban/rural status

Further data

  • The Gambling Commission have produced statistics on gambling by adults during 2019, and estimated that in the year 2019, 47% of adults gambled in the last four weeks. A key difference between the Taking Part survey and the Gambling Commission’s report is the reference period used. The Taking Part survey asks about activities within the last 12 months whereas the Gambling Commission asks only about the last 4 weeks.
