Details

This release updates the provisional data published in February. These statistics include all vehicle drivers, their passengers and foot passengers on ferries.

The main findings for 2012 include:

  • international sea passenger movements fell by 6% to 21.4 million.
  • this decline was due to a fall in sea passengers on long and short sea international routes. Channel Tunnel passengers exceeded those on international short sea journeys for the first time.
  • cruise passenger numbers have been growing in popularity, with a total of 1.7 million last year. This was over 20 times the amount in 1982.
  • passengers on domestic sea crossings and inter-island journeys both fell for the second year, whereas the number of passengers on river ferries rose for the second consecutive year by 2% to 20.1 million.
