Reported road casualties Great Britain: implemented and upcoming changes
Published 28 May 2026
This page provides an update on changes to the publication of road casualty data and statistics. It sets out which changes have already been implemented following our September 2025 user feedback request, and what further changes are planned for future releases.
These changes are intended to improve the timeliness of the statistics, as well as to support clarity, transparency and continued alignment with user needs.
Feedback can be provided by emailing any comments to the road safety statistics team at roadacc.stats@dft.gov.uk.
1. Implemented changes
Following the user feedback request published in September 2025, and in the absence of objections, the following changes are being introduced from May 2026 onwards:
-
Figures are now reported using current local authority boundaries, rather than the boundaries in place at the time of the collision. This allows for more consistent time series and improves comparability over time.
-
The presentation of killed or seriously injured (KSI) statistics has been updated to focus on adjusted figures. Unadjusted figures will remain available where appropriate (for example, at police force or local authority level) and within open data files.
-
Casualty rates will now be presented per billion miles, removing the kilometre-based measure to improve clarity and consistency across publications.
2. Publication timelines
We are introducing a revised publication timetable to improve the timeliness and usability of road casualty statistics.
2.1 July 2026 – main annual publication
The July release will become the main publication of final STATS19 statistics for the year.
It will include:
-
the core Reported road casualties Great Britain (RRCGB) report, published in a chapter-based format
-
the majority of data tables and open data downloads
-
standard interactive data tools
-
drink-drive statistics
Some elements that rely on later data availability (for example, casualty rates requiring National Travel Survey exposure data) will initially be published using estimates.
We also plan to introduce a new chapter on Safety Performance Indicators (SPIs), aligned with the Road Safety Strategy, subject to final readiness and analytical sign-off.
2.2 September 2026 – additional analysis and development release
The September release will focus on additional analysis and product development, rather than headline statistics.
This is expected to include:
-
updated casualty rates based on National Travel Survey data
-
additional data tables
-
new and enhanced chapters and factsheets
-
further improvements to interactive data tools
3. Safety Performance Indicators (SPI) reporting
We plan to introduce a dedicated chapter on Safety Performance Indicators (SPIs) in future publications, aligned with the forthcoming Road Safety Strategy.
This will:
-
present SPIs relying on STATS19 data
-
provide a consistent framework for monitoring these changes over time
-
support users in understanding trends across different aspects of road safety
These statistics will remain descriptive and will not assess policy effectiveness.
4. Any other feedback
We welcome continued feedback on these changes and on the statistics more broadly.
For example:
-
Does the proposed timeliness and frequency of the publications meet your needs?
-
Are there additional topics or analyses you would like to see included in the publications?
-
Are there any additional breakdowns which could be included in the published data tables?
