Highlights

  • March 2021 saw an overall decrease in quantity of landings (tonnes) compared to March 2019 and 2020, down 20 per cent and 7 per cent respectively. This led to an almost proportionate decrease in value landed (£000’s) in March 2021 compared to 2019 and 2020, down 22 per cent and 2 per cent respectively.

  • The cumulative landings from January to March 2021 showed an increase from the same period in 2019 (1 per cent) but were down by 3 per cent compared to 2020.

  • This relatively low activity of the fishing industry in early 2021 will be caused by a combination of factors, including the pandemic. Uncertainty around fishing opportunities for the year will also be contributing as UK TACs were only set on a provisional basis for 3 months during this period. However, March 2021 landings activity showed a 125 per cent increase in landings compared February 2021 landings, from 25 thousand tonnes in February to 57 thousand tonnes landed by UK vessels in March, this may be driven by the easing of lockdown restrictions starting during March 2021.
