9 July 2026 Universal Credit Advances Model – Effectiveness Assessment 2026 The UC Advances model is a machine learning system developed by DWP to risk-assess requests for Universal Credit (UC) Advances. It is currently the only machine learning model deployed at scale in live service for fraud prevention purposes . Its primary function is to identify  advance claims with a higher likelihood of fraud, enabling the Department to focus verification efforts where they are most needed. This risk-based approach aims to minimise disruption for legitimate claimants, optimise taxpayer value  and enhance fraud detection effectiveness. The report sets out this background and makes an assessment, informed by statistical analysis, of the impact on claimants with protected characteristics.

Ad hoc statistics are added to the DWP collection of ad hoc statistics on the day of release.
