Statistics on light rail and tram systems in England.

The statistics are collected annually to inform the development and monitoring of light rail policy. Figures present information on usage, infrastructure and revenue for the 8 systems which are urban and primarily surface-running.

In the financial year ending March 2021:

  • light rail and tram use in England decreased by 69.0% from the year ending March 2020, down to 81.7 million passenger journeys
  • a 74.5% decrease in passenger journeys in England (outside London) and a 64.4% decrease in London

When comparing to the financial year ending March 2020:

  • vehicle mileage decreased by 12.9% to 19.4 million miles
  • light rail revenue decreased by 64.9% (a decrease in real terms of 67.2%)

The coronavirus pandemic has had an impact on every aspect of life in the United Kingdom, which has affected almost all statistical trends across the transport sector. The period covered by this release includes time after movement restrictions due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) were announced in March 2020.
