About this release 2004 - 2007 revised results for the United Kingdom

Public Service Agreement 4 (SR2004)

PSA4, Improve the productivity of the creative, tourism and leisure industries, was agreed as part of the 2004 Spending Review (SR2004, covering the 2005-08 spending period).

For the purposes of this PSA, productivity is estimated by dividing gross value added (GVA) by total employment. Both GVA and total employment are sourced from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) Annual Business Inquiry. Baselines and progress against targets are reported under two headings: “Tourism and Leisure Related Industries” and “Creative Industries”.

Performance is assessed by comparing annual percentage increases in the productivity figures against those for the UK service sector as a whole. The base year for the data on productivity performance is 2004. Timeliness of reporting on progress against the target is dependent on the release of the ABI data by ONS - provisional results are available around 12 months after the end of a particular reference year, with revised results available after around 18 months.

Report structure

The report presents the latest data, in chart and tabular form, for the indices of productivity (based to 2004) for the creative and tourism and leisure related industries as well as for the service sector and UK economy as a whole.

Technical Note

The accompanying Technical Note sets out how DCMS is measuring progress towards SR2004 PSA4. It includes details on the measurement and reporting of the target, and full definitions of the industries in scope.
