Details

In 2013, the total amount of goods moved for all domestic waterborne freight fell by 19% to 28.5 billion-tonne kilometres. This figure can be broken down into:

  • coastwise traffic (traffic carried around the coast from one UK port to another), fell by 18% to 19.4 billion tonne-kilometres
  • one-port traffic (traffic to and from offshore locations, such as oil rigs and sea dredging, fell by 23% to 8.0 billion tonne-kilometres
  • inland waters traffic (traffic carried by barge or sea going vessels on the inland waterways network (rivers and canals)), increased by 1% to 1.4 billion tonne-kilometres
