This release presents experimental statistics from the Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS), using final submissions for August 2016 and provisional submissions for September 2016.

Details

Mental health, learning disabilities and autism services

  • At the end of September, there were 1,236,804 people in contact with services; the majority of these (1,062,673) were in adult mental health services. There were 126,546 people in contact with children and young people’s mental health services and 69,310 in learning disabilities and autism services.
  • During September, 249,233 new referrals were received into services and 1,534,805 care contacts were attended.
  • 18,734 people were subject to the Mental Health Act at the end of September, including 13,475 people detained in hospital.

Adult mental health services

  • Between 1 July and 30 September final data shows that 2,131 referrals with suspected first episode psychosis commenced, of which 1,347 (63.2 per cent) waited two weeks or less.
  • 78.7 per cent of people in contact with adult mental health services at the end of September who had been treated under the Care Programme Approach for the last twelve months received a review during that time.
  • There were 7,235 open ward stays at the end of September in adult acute mental health inpatient care. Of these, for the patients for whom the distance travelled could be calculated, 314 were receiving care 50km or more away from their home postcode.

Children and young people in contact with mental health services

  • Between 1 August and 31 October provisional data shows that 1,053 new referrals for people aged under 19 with eating disorder issues were received.
  • There were 286,333 referrals active at any point during September for people aged under 19, of which 34,806 were new referrals and 32,089 people under 19 were discharged during the month.
  • Of the 1,182,921 people in contact with mental health services at the end of September, 221,840 (18.8 per cent) were aged under 19.

People with learning disabilities and/or autism

  • There were 13,125 new referrals for people with learning disabilities and/or autistic spectrum disorders in September, with 133,380 open referrals at the end of the month.
  • There were 3,715 people with learning disabilities and/or autistic spectrum disorders in hospital at the end of September, of which 1,730 were in a secure setting.
  • Of those people with LDA in hospital at the end of September, 1,595 were in hospital within 10km of their home, whereas 400 had travelled over 50km.
