Details of the application

Yorkshire Water Services Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for two licences.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a licence to abstract (take) water from the River Don in Sheffield, South Yorkshire at National Grid Reference (NGR) SK 32880 91537 to transfer it to the River Don at NGR SK 32852 91525 without intervening use, for the purpose of a Larinier fish pass.

The application is to abstract water as follows:

  • 3,672 cubic metres an hour
  • 88,128 cubic metres a day
  • 32,166,720 cubic metres a year
  • between 1 April and 31 March inclusive in each year.

Yorkshire Water Services Limited has also applied for a licence to obstruct or impede the flow of the River Don at Sheffield, South Yorkshire at NGR SK 32866 91517. The existing lower weir at Niagara weir will be replaced by a fixed masonry weir. The original weir at the site was installed to create a head of water to provide energy to serve a mill or forge.
