York Potash Ltd has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a full licence to abstract water from the Redcar Mudstone aquifers between Wilton and Lockwood Beck, North Yorkshire at National Grid References NZ 58132 22714 and NZ 67369 14148 respectively.

The application is to abstract water as follows:

  • 198 cubic metres an hour
  • 4,752 cubic metres a day
  • 1,734,480 cubic metres a year
  • at an instantaneous rate not exceeding 55 litres per second.

Abstraction will take place all year and will be required to support construction of the Mineral Transport System (tunnel). The licence will be used to dewater the stretch of tunnel between Wilton and Lockwood Beck as above.
