Details of the applications

Wakefield Sand and Gravel Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for two licences.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of these applications, in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The first application is for a full licence to abstract water from the River Calder at an abstraction reach between National Grid References (NGRs) SE 35420 23418 and SE 35530 23500.

The application is to abstract water all year round as follows:

  • 200 cubic metres an hour
  • 2,000 cubic metres a day
  • 730,000 cubic metres a year

The second application is for a full licence to abstract groundwater from River Terrace Deposits near Stanley, Wakefield. The water will be abstracted from an area formed between NGRs SE 35000 23682, SE 35667 23605, SE 35483 23107 and SE 35119 23293.

The application is to abstract water all year round as follows:

  • 100 cubic metres an hour
  • 1,000 cubic metres a day
  • 365,000 cubic metres a year

The water will be used for mineral washing. The water abstracted will be stored in water storage lagoons which will provide water supply to the processing plant.
