Wainstones Energy Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application (in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a full licence to abstract water from the Manchester Ship Canal at Carrington, National Grid Reference (NGR) SJ 72591 93298.

The application is to abstract water as follows:

  • 1,988 cubic metres an hour
  • 47,711 cubic metres a day
  • 12,455,212 cubic metres a year

Between 1 April and 31 March inclusive in each year.

The water will be used for evaporative cooling and demineralisation for the production of energy. The application is to support a proposed power station at Carrington, Trafford. 30% of the abstracted water will be discharged back into the Manchester Ship Canal at NGR SJ 72447 92912.
