The NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (NDPP) is a national programme for England that aims to identify people at high risk of type 2 diabetes and refer them onto a behaviour change programme.

Studies show that people who access and remain engaged with a weight management programme for longer tend to lose more weight. Therefore, in this review and behavioural analysis of group based weight management programmes, we identify the:

  • main factors (barriers and facilitators) that affect whether people take up weight management programmes
  • main factors (barriers and facilitators) influencing continued engagement with programmes
  • components of programme recruitment methods and programme design that are associated with high uptake and retention
