The University of Brighton has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application (in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a full licence to abstract water from a borehole into the Brighton Chalk Block aquifer on the University of Brighton campus for use in a reverse flow ground-source heating and cooling system. The scheme involves two boreholes at National Grid References (NGR) TQ 32553 06750 and TQ 32437 06678 with abstraction to take place from either of the two. All water abstracted will then be returned to the aquifer via the other borehole, with this abstraction and discharge being interchangeable as the scheme requires.

The application is to abstract water as follows:

  • 60 cubic metres an hour
  • 1,440 cubic metres a day
  • 525,600 cubic metres a year
