United Utilities Water Limited: application made to impound water
Published 21 February 2015
Applies to England
United Utilities Water Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for 2 impounding licences.
The Environment Agency is giving notice of these applications in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.
The applications are for licences to obstruct or impede the flow of Swindale Beck, in 2 locations both at National Grid Reference (NGR) NY 51 13 near Shap, Cumbria.
The first application is to modify an existing impounding weir which allows water to be abstracted from Swindale Beck. Water enters the Swindale aqueduct which takes water into Haweswater Reservoir, for subsequent public water supply abstraction. The works will include a new coanda intake screen and new fish and eel passes. The licence, if granted, will supersede Section 4 of The Manchester Corporation (Swindale Beck) Water Order 1956.
The second application is to construct a new gauging weir to measure river flow. It will include an eel pass.
The works are a result of a review by the Environment Agency in line with the requirements of the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2010 (known as the Habitats Regulations).
Impoundment licences are needed before any in river works can be carried out.
