About

FluSurvey is a participatory surveillance system, mainly operating during the Autumn and Winter seasons.

During these periods, any person aged 18 or over can register free of charge on the FluSurvey platform to report any respiratory symptoms they may experience.

On registration, participants are asked to complete a basic information questionnaire asking general questions as well as any risk factors relevant to some diseases (for example, household size, age, and vaccination status).

Following this, each week that FluSurvey operates, registered participants receive an email with a link to a questionnaire asking about any respiratory symptoms experienced since the last visit (or if there have been none).

Participation is entirely voluntary and the questionnaire information is used for surveillance of respiratory infections. An additional benefit of FluSurvey is that it does not rely only on people visiting health services and provides public health services with insights about how infections might be occurring in the community.

FluSurvey data

Information on illness trends is published during the winter season. This information will be published in the National Flu and COVID-19 report and the UKHSA Data Dashboard.

More information on the data quality related to FluSurvey publications is available.

For more information about how we handle data provided by FluSurvey participants, please see the FluSurvey privacy policy.
