Details

On 16 June 2026, the United Kingdom and Belgium signed a bilateral arrangement under the London Protocol to support the transport and permanent storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) between the two countries. This is an important milestone in the UK and Belgium’s development of a growing carbon capture, usage and storage (CCUS) market, which will support investment and faster deployment of CCUS. The arrangement demonstrates our shared vision for CCUS and the opportunities it presents for growth by helping to deliver skilled jobs and economic growth to our countries.

This arrangement will help to overcome a key regulatory barrier for transporting and storing captured CO2 , by allowing for the import and export of CO2 for permanent geological storage, an essential step for enabling cross-border CCUS projects.
