Two applications have been made to the Environment Agency. The Environment Agency are required to give notice of these applications.

The applications have been made by:

The applications are for:

  • an impoundment licence to obstruct or impede the flow of Trout Beck near to Troutbeck Bridge, Cumbria at National Grid Reference (NGR) NY 40489 00675. The impounding works are to make alterations to the existing weir to facilitate the abstraction (taking) of water for hydropower generation

  • a transfer licence to abstract (take) water from Trout Beck near to Troutbeck Bridge, Cumbria at NGR NY 40489 00675

The proposal is to abstract water at the following rates and periods:

  • 120,960 cubic metres per day
  • at an instantaneous rate of 1,400 litres per second
  • between 1st April and 31st March inclusive in each year

All of the water transferred into the leat channel will be used for hydropower generation with a single Archimedes turbine and will be returned to Trout Beck near to NGR NY 40356 00623.

The proposal includes the provision of a minimum prescribed flow to help maintain the ecology of the deprived river channel.
