Traffic Angel Privacy Notice

The Ministry of Justice (MOJ) is committed to the protection and security of your personal information.

It is important that you read this notice so that you are aware of how and why we are using such information. This privacy notice describes how we collect and use personal information during and after your relationship with us, in accordance with data protection law. They will be updated regularly.

MOJ is the data controller for the personal data used for the purposes of recording the surroundings of our vehicles when they are in use. This is so the MoJ can validate insurance claims against it from the public and to enforce its own claims, should an incident occur.

The type of personal data we process

We currently collect and use the following information:

  • driving registrations

We also collect special categories of information:

  • race
  • biometrics

How we get your personal data and why we have it

We receive personal information indirectly, from the public during our public work, when our vehicles are in use transporting goods, services, and people to various locations. When our vehicles are in use (engine switched on) the four cameras mounted on each vehicle are recording footage (no sound) in real time.

We use the personal data we receive to

  • validate claims from the public regarding incidents involving our vehicles
  • validate our own driver claims regarding incidents that occur while they are in possession of the vehicle
  • comply with insurance requests

We may share this information with:

  • insurance companies
  • legal bodies

Under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR), the lawful bases we rely on for processing this information is:

(f) We have a legitimate interest

We legitimately record vehicles surroundings so we can assure ourselves against claims both true and false from the public and our own staff.

The legal bases on which the MOJ processes special categories of information you have provided, is:

  • the processing being necessary for the establishment, exercise, or defence of legal claims

How we store your personal data

Data is stored on a securely stored hard drive. Each hard drive stores 1000 hours of footage. After this time span the data is automatically over-written unless it has been downloaded onto another secure system and used to manage an incident claim. If this occurs the data will be retained by the MoJ in line with our retention policy.

Your rights

  • your right of access - You have the right to ask us for copies of your personal information
  • your right to rectification - You have the right to ask us to rectify personal information you think is inaccurate. You also have the right to ask us to complete information you think is incomplete
  • your right to erasure - You have the right to ask us to erase your personal information in certain circumstances
  • your right to restriction of processing - You have the right to ask us to restrict the processing of your personal information in certain circumstances
  • your right to object to processing - You have the right to object to the processing of your personal information in certain circumstances

Depending on the lawful basis on which your personal data is being processed, not all rights will apply.

You are not required to pay any charge for exercising your rights. If you make a request, we have one month to respond to you. Please ensure you state the time, date, and location you believe the recording took place. If you wish to exercise your data protection rights, please contact:
