SLCN pupils: how their needs change as they progress in school

How the needs of children with speech, communication and language needs (SLCN) change as they progress through the education system.

The research carried out 2 studies of pupils with SLCN and looked at:

  • how the proportion of children identified as having SLCN and/or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) varied over time and by age
  • the characteristics of individuals who make transitions into and out of both the SLCN and the ASD category of need during secondary school

The better communication research programme was part of a review of services for children and young people with SLCN.
