The Secretary of State for Work and Pensions makes these Directions in exercise of the powers conferred by paragraph 2(3), (4), (5) and (8) of Schedule 9ZC (electronic communication) to the Social Security (Claims and Payments) Regulations 1987[footnote 1] and paragraph 2(2), (3), (4) and (7) of Schedule 2 (electronic communications) to the Universal Credit, Personal Independence Payment, Jobseeker’s Allowance and Employment Support Allowance (Claims and Payments) Regulations 2013[footnote 2].

1. Citation, commencement and extent

1. — (1) These Directions may be cited as the Social Security (Electronic Communications) (Amendment) Directions 2023.

(2) These Directions come into force 21 days after the day on which they are made.

(3) These Directions extend to England and Wales and Scotland.

2. Amendment of the Social Security (Electronic Communications) Consolidation and Amendment Directions 2011

2. — (1) The Social Security (Electronic Communications) Consolidation and Amendment Directions 2011 made on 6 December 2011[footnote 3] are amended as follows.

(2) In paragraph 1(2) (citation, commencement and interpretation), in the definition of “relevant benefit” —

(a) after paragraph (a) insert —
“(aa) bereavement support payment;”;

(b) after paragraph (h) insert —
“(hza) maternity allowance;”;

(c) after paragraph (j) insert —
“(ja) universal credit.”;

(d) omit paragraph (k)[footnote 4].
