Birthday Honours List 2026 - High Awards (HTML)

Published 12 June 2026

COMPANION OF HONOUR (CH)

SIR DONALD MCCULLIN CBE

The celebrated and knighted photographer, known for stark images of war and social inequality, was the subject of Tate Britain’s 2019-20 retrospective. His recent prolific output includes two 2023 books, Life, Death and Everything in Between and Journeys Across Roman Asia Minor, reflecting a shift from documenting immediate suffering to exploring history through place. This duality is seen in late-career exhibitions like Broken Beauty (2026), which uses still life and landscape as a moral counterbalance to his conflict imagery. Despite global recognition, including the 2025 Bodley Medal, the 90-year-old remains ambivalent, lamenting his work’s inability to stop human conflict. He continues to mentor young photographers, emphasising empathy, honesty, and moral responsibility in documenting local social injustices. His enduring work confronts the world’s horrors and beauty with unflinching sensitivity.
