The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application, in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The first application is for a full licence to abstract (take) water from the Comb Beck in the Whinlatter Forest Park near Keswick at National Grid Reference (NGR) NY 21352 24620.

The application is to abstract water as follows:

  • 720 cubic metres an hour
  • 17,297 cubic metres a day
  • 4,500,000 cubic metres a year
  • At an instantaneous rate not exceeding 200 litres per second.

The water will be used to generate hydro-electric power (HEP) before returning to the Comb Beck 917 metres downstream at NGR NY 21985 25166.

The second application is for a licence to obstruct or impede the flow of water at the abstraction point at NGR NY 21352 24620. By installing an intake weir across the width of the channel, water will be impounded to facilitate abstraction into a penstock pipe.
