Details of the application

The Environment Agency is applying to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of these applications in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Paragraph 2 of Schedule 2 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for two licences to enable the removal of two deteriorating small weirs at Geltsdale near Castle Carrock, one on New Water at National Grid Reference (NGR) NY 57527 53207 and the other on Old Water at NGR NY 57840 53594. Their removal will help to re-naturalise the streams.

Further details of the proposal are:

• The works are scheduled to take place over summer 2024.

• The downstream weir on Old Water and its licenced abstraction will not be altered by this proposal.

• The weir removal will help return the streams to their natural state.

• The removal of the weirs will assist with fish passage in the streams.
