The Environment Agency: application made to impound water

The Environment Agency has applied to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Paragraph 2 of Schedule 2 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.”

The application is for an impoundment licence.

The proposal is a Flood Alleviation Scheme near Hunters Hill Farm on the Cocker Beck tributary within the area of National Grid References SK 65378 46458, SK 65564 46348, SK 65035 45933, and SK 64907 46153. The Cocker Beck will be re-aligned within a newly created basin and discharged downstream through a new flow control structure.

Water will be impeded or obstructed by means of a flow control structure at National Grid Reference SK 65456 46323 consisting of a reinforced concrete culvert box. A basin will be created upstream of the flow control structure to store flood flows, with a capacity of 102,000 cubic metres. The earth embankment will not exceed 35.8 metres above ordnance datum. The works have been designed to ensure that they have a negligible effect on the environment whilst protecting the downstream village of Lowdham and its residents and businesses from flooding.

After the 23rd May 2024, the Environment Agency will be able to grant a licence authorising the proposal. The licence shall be viewed as granted, unless the Secretary of State, either as a result of any representations made about the proposal or otherwise, instructs or asks for an application to be made to them.
