Details of the application

The Environment Agency has applied to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for a licence.

The application is for an impoundment licence to authorise the replacement of Stanstead Radial Gate on the River Lee Navigation at Stanstead Abbotts, Ware, Hertfordshire, located at National Grid Reference TL 38082 12181.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application, in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Paragraph 2 of Schedule 2 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

Proposed works consist of the removal of the existing single radial gate which is reaching the end of its current service life. This structure will be replaced with two stainless steel tilting gates separated by a concrete pier, and a 450 millimetre wide Larinier fish pass controlled by an upstream penstock and comprising two flights with an intermediate resting pool and in bank eel pass. Current impoundment level is 30.20 metres Above Ordnance Datum (AOD) and the coping level is 30.80 metres AOD. These levels will be the same during the construction period and after completion of the works.
