Details of the application

The Environment Agency has applied to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Paragraph 2 of Schedule 2 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a transfer licence to abstract water from the River Lea or Lee at National Grid Reference (NGR) TL 37586 00198 at Rammey Sluice, Waltham Abbey, Essex for the purpose of a fish and eel pass.

The application is to transfer water as follows:

  • 2,046 cubic metres an hour
  • 49,110 cubic metres a day
  • 17,925,062 cubic metres a year
  • between 1 April and 31 March inclusive in each year.
  • at a maximum instantaneous rate of 568.4 litres per second.

Further details: Rammey Sluice requires refurbishment to maintain water levels and prevent flood risk and the fish and eel pass is to be constructed as a 1.2 metre wide bypass channel around the sluice as part of this project. All water transferred through the Larinier-type fish pass and eel pass, using ‘eel tiles’ in an incorporated dedicated channel, will be discharged back to the River Lea or Lee immediately downstream of the sluice at NGR TL 37583 00186.
