The Environment Agency has applied to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Paragraph 2 of Schedule 2 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for an impoundment licence to authorise the replacement of Hardmead Radial Gate on the River Lee Navigation at Hardmead Lock, Stanstead Abbotts, Ware, Hertfordshire at National Grid Reference TL 37043 13365.

Further details of the proposal are: the radial gate, which is at the end of its serviceable life, will be replaced with a new structure containing two tilting weirs and a fish pass and eel pass to maintain water levels for water supply, navigation, amenity, environmental purposes and flood protection. The fish pass will be a penstock flow controlled Larinier-type design of 450 mm width with two flights, a resting pool and incorporate eel tiles fixed to the side wall. The new structure will be operated to maintain the existing water levels and flows currently experienced up and downstream of Hardmead and into the River Lea or Lee (Amwell Magna Loop) via Tumbling Bay Weir.
