Details of the application

The Environment Agency is applying to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affair for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application, in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Paragraph 2 of Schedule 2 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a licence to impound water in the Brough Beck near Catterick, North Yorkshire at National Grid Reference SE 22822 97707.

The impoundment includes an earth embankment not exceeding 69.74 metres above ordnance datum in height complete with flood spillways and two box culverts, each with a hydrobrake, to hold back water in 1 in 100 year flood events. Flows will be unrestricted to pass downstream of the impoundment in normal (non-flood) conditions. The flood storage area (reservoir) resulting from the impounding works shall be used only for temporary storage of flood water with a total capacity of 414,330 cubic metres of water.
