This rapid response review was carried out during February and April 2012. It examines existing knowledge on the demographic characteristics of foster carers in the UK. It explores research on what encourages individuals and families to become foster carers and any barriers they may face.

It also explores how this information can be used to inform recruitment and retention strategies, whilst identifying examples of good practice, and gaps in our knowledge.
