The Canal and River Trust: application made to abstract water

The Canal and River Trust has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.
The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.
The application is for a full licence to abstract (take) water from the River Soar at Kegworth Lock in Rushcliffe at National Grid Reference (NGR) SK 49154 26797.
The application is to abstract water all year as follows:
- 41,400 cubic metres an hour
- 993,600 cubic metres a day
- 170,000,000 cubic metres a year
- At an instantaneous rate not exceeding 11,500 litres per second.
The water will be used to generate hydro-electric power (HEP) before returning to the River Soar approximately 70 metres downstream at NGR SK 49216 26819, immediately downstream of the Lock. A Larinier fish pass will also be installed alongside the HEP turbine to aid upstream passage of migratory and coarse fish. An eel pass will also be provided alongside the fish pass.
The applicant has also submitted several applications for similar HEP schemes on the River Trent. These will be advertised separately in due course.
