Details of the application

Tarmac Trading Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is to vary licence serial number NW/068/0002/010 which authorises the abstraction of water from underground strata comprising of glacial sand deposits (two groundwater fed lagoons) at Eaton Hall Quarry, Manchester Road, Congleton.

The variation applied for is to change the area of abstraction for the purpose of dredging (conveying materials), increase the quantities of abstraction for the purpose of mineral washing and change the area of abstraction for the purpose of transfer to maintain water levels.

The application is to abstract water as follows:

Abstraction Area C is denoted by National Grid References (NGRs) SJ 85887 65524, SJ 86007 65654, SJ 86547 65528 and SJ 86375 65042.

Area C for mineral washing

  • 305.6 litres per second
  • 1,100 cubic metres an hour
  • 11,000 cubic metres a day
  • 2,981,000 cubic metres a year

Area C for Transfer to maintain the water level in Area D

  • 197 litres per second
  • 710 cubic metres an hour
  • 12,425 cubic metres a day
  • 2,127,600 cubic metres a year

Abstraction Area D is denoted by NGRs SJ 85627 66344, SJ 86364 66539, SJ 86633 66000 and SJ 85804 65692.

Water used on site for the purpose of mineral washing is discharged to a stream at National Grid Reference SJ 85750 65621 under Environmental Permit number NPSWQD003822.
