Details of the application

Tarmac Trading Limited have applied to the Environment Agency for a transfer licence and a full abstraction licence; and Castle Cement Limited have applied to the Environment Agency for a transfer licence and a full abstraction licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The applications for the licences to abstract water are from within Bankfield Quarry and Lanehead Quarry, which occupy the same quarry void, on the north eastern outskirts of Clitheroe, Lancashire at National Grid Reference (NGR) SD 75800 43900.

The applications are to abstract water as follows:

Application NPS/WR/033012 – Tarmac Trading Limited – Bankfield Quarry

Transfer licence at NGR SD 75652 43612:

  • 644 cubic metres an hour
  • 15,456 cubic metres a day
  • 4,757,640 cubic metres a year
  • between 1 April and 31 March inclusive in each year.

The water will be used for dewatering and will be discharged to Plimlico Brook at NGR SD 75850 43450.

Further details are: water will initially be abstracted from groundwater via a sump which will provide primary settlement for suspended solids. This water is moved to a secondary settlement lagoon before then discharging to Plimlico Brook.

Application NPS/WR/033455 – Tarmac Trading Limited – Bankfield Quarry

Full abstraction licence at National Grid References SD 75652 43612 and SD 75874 43806. For the purpose of stream augmentation:

  • 36 cubic metres an hour
  • 864 cubic metres a day
  • 237,600 cubic metres a year
  • between 1 March and 30 November inclusive in each year.

The water will be used for stream augmentation of Heys Brook at NGR SD 76839 44084.

Further details are: water will initially be abstracted from groundwater via a sump which will provide primary settlement for suspended solids. This water is moved to a secondary settlement lagoon before then discharging to Heys Brook at NGR SD 76839 44084.

For the purpose of process water

  • 7.2 cubic metres an hour
  • 72 cubic metres a day
  • 17,280 cubic metres a year

For the purpose of dust suppression

  • 65.4 cubic metres an hour
  • 119.4 cubic metres a day
  • 5,256 cubic metres a year

Abstraction for process water and dust suppression will occur between 1 April and 31 March inclusive in each year.

Further details are: water abstracted for the purpose of process water and dust suppression will be from groundwater via sumps.

Application NPS/WR/033013 – Castle Cement Limited – Bankfield Quarry

Transfer licence at NGR SD 75106 43973:

  • 48 cubic metres an hour
  • 576 cubic metres a day
  • 34,560 cubic metres a year
  • between 1 April and 31 March inclusive in each year.

Further details are: The water will be abstracted from groundwater at Lanehead Low Level via a pump to a catch pit.

Application NPS/WR/033015 – Castle Cement Limited – Lanehead Quarry

Full abstraction licence at NGR SD 75652 43612:

  • 410 cubic metres an hour
  • 9,820 cubic metres a day
  • 2,690,680 cubic metres a year
  • between 1 March and 30 November inclusive in each year.

The water will be used for stream augmentation and will be discharged to Heys Brook at NGR SD 76839 44084.

Further details are: the water will initially be abstracted from groundwater via a sump which will provide primary settlement for suspended solids. This water is moved to a secondary settlement lagoon before then discharging to Heys Brook.
