Syndromic surveillance summary: 29 August 2026 week 35

Updated 10 September 2026

Reporting week 35: 24 to 30 August 2026

During week 35, patient contacts for gastrointestinal syndromic indicators were stable or decreasing but remained above baseline level in several systems. Small increases in ‘asthma’ and ‘difficulty breathing’ type indicators were seen in the emergency department (ED) and GP out-of-hours, in line with seasonal expectations.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 35, daily ‘difficulty breathing or wheeze or asthma’ contacts increased, in line with the seasonal expectation. Daily total GP out-of-hours contacts increased over public holiday weekend (Saturday 29 to Monday 31 August), as would usually be expected.

Note: there was a sharp increase in the number of daily contacts for influenza-like illness recorded on Friday 28 August. These contacts were predominantly in adults aged 65 years and over in one region and are therefore likely to have resulted from a small, localised outbreak (for example, in a care home).

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system

ED attendances for asthma increased slightly, as expected at the time of year. Attendances for gastroenteritis decreased, though remain similar to the baseline.

Note: we are investigating an apparent reduction in the total number of attendances identified in a small number of EDs during weeks 34 and 35.
