Reporting week 34: 17 to 23 August 2026
During week 34, heat-related activity across syndromic surveillance systems continued to decline following the downgrading of Heat-Health Alerts. NHS 111 calls and online assessments for heat exposure or sunburn decreased, while GP in-hours, GP out-of-hours and ambulance indicators for heat or sunstroke all returned to seasonally expected levels. Contacts for gastroenteritis, diarrhoea and vomiting increased slightly in the GP out-of-hours system and remained above baseline levels.
Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system
During week 34, NHS 111 triaged calls and online assessments for ‘heat exposure or sunburn’ decreased, in line with the downgrading of the Heat-Health Alert from amber to yellow across parts of England. Calls and assessments for insect bites also decreased, remaining below seasonally expected levels.

GP in-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 34, GP in-hours consultation rates for gastroenteritis increased slightly and were above seasonally expected levels. The daily consultation rate for ‘heat or sunstroke’ decreased and returned to expected levels.

During week 34, daily GP out-of-hours contacts for ‘heat or sunstroke’ decreased and returned to expected levels. Contacts for gastroenteritis, diarrhoea and vomiting increased slightly and remained above baseline levels.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system
During week 34, the total number of attendances were relatively low over the weekend owing to low reporting for some EDs in week 34. Respiratory and gastrointestinal indicators remained stable or decreased in week 34.
