Syndromic surveillance summary: 12 September 2026 week 37

There were increases acute respiratory indicators across all syndromic surveillance systems during week 37, particularly in child age groups up to 14 years. These increases were in line with seasonally expected trends.

Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system

During week 37, NHS 111 triaged calls and online assessments for acute respiratory infection increased, particularly in children aged up to 14 years, in line with seasonal expectations.

GP in-hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 37, there were small increases in GP in-hours consultation rates for respiratory indicators including: COVID-19-like upper and lower respiratory tract infections; influenza-like illness; bronchiolitis; acute bronchitis; and acute presenting asthma. All increases were small and in line with seasonally expected trends.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 37, daily contacts for ‘acute respiratory infections’ increased, particularly in children aged 0 to 14 years, in line with the expected trend at the time of year. Daily contacts for ‘acute bronchitis/bronchiolitis’ also increased slightly, though remained below seasonal expectations. Contacts for gastroenteritis, diarrhoea and vomiting all decreased, though gastroenteritis and diarrhoea remained above seasonally expected levels.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system

During week 37, total emergency department (ED) attendances as well as attendances for acute respiratory infection and asthma continued to increase, particularly in children aged up to 14 years, in line with seasonal expectations. Attendances for ‘acute bronchiolitis or bronchitis’ increased in children aged 1 to 4 years. There were also small increases in COVID-19-like and influenza-like illness attendances nationally. There was an increase in ‘heat or sunstroke’ ED attendances in the North East region on 13 September.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system

During week 37, daily ambulance calls for difficulty breathing increased, in line with seasonally expected trends.
