During week 43 there were continued increases in influenza-like illness indicators above seasonally expected levels in the GP in-hours and emergency department (ED) systems, particularly in child age groups (1 to 14 years), while COVID-19-like indicators decreased.   Further increases in acute respiratory infection indicators were in line with seasonal expectations and seen in the child age groups (1 to 14 years) in particular.

Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system

During week 43, NHS 111 acute respiratory infection triaged calls continued to rise slightly, mainly in children aged 1 to 14 years, in line with seasonal expectations. NHS 111 triaged calls for vomiting increased in children aged 1 to 14 years, as expected for the time of year.

GP in hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 43, GP in-hours consultation rates for influenza-like illness were stable overall, but above seasonally expected levels and rising in the 5 to 14 age group. Consultations for COVID-19 decreased whilst those for upper respiratory tract infection continued to increase and were slightly above seasonally expected levels. Consultations for lower respiratory tract infection and acute bronchitis also increased but remain at expected levels. Scarlet fever consultations increased slightly but remain below baseline.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 43, GP out-of-hours acute respiratory infection daily contacts continued to increase, particularly in children aged 5 to 14 years, in line with seasonal expectations. Influenza-like illness contacts increased, above seasonally expected levels. Fever contacts also increased, notably in children aged between 1 and 14 years, but remain below seasonally expected levels.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system

During week 43, ED attendances for influenza-like illness continued to increase above seasonally expected levels. Acute respiratory infection continued to increase in line with seasonal expectations, particularly in children aged 1 to 14 years.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system

During week 43, daily ambulance calls for ‘cardiac or respiratory arrest’ increased slightly but remain below expected levels.
