Reporting week 48: 24 to 30 November 2025
During week 48 there were further increases in acute respiratory infection indicators across syndromic systems, with continuing increasing activity particularly noted in children aged 1 to 4 and 5 to 14 years. Influenza-like illness (ILI) indicators also continued to increase during week 48, with activity remaining above seasonally expected levels. Increases in ILI indicators were again observed in children aged between 1 and 14 years. Acute bronchiolitis indicators increased in children aged less than 5 years during week 48, however activity remained below levels expected for the time of year.
Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system
During week 48, the daily number of NHS 111 triaged calls and online assessments for acute respiratory infections continued to increase, mainly in children aged under 15 years, although smaller increases were observed across other age groups. There were also increases noted in triaged calls and online assessments for vomiting, with increases particularly seen in the 1 to 4 and 5 to 14 years age groups.

GP in-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 48 there were continued increases in GP in-hours consultation rates for upper and lower respiratory tract infections, particularly in children aged 1 to 14 years. Consultation rates for influenza-like illness also increased, with rates overall remaining above expected levels for the time of year. ILI rates increased particularly in children aged 1 to 4 and 5 to 14 years and adults aged 15 to 44 years. Vomiting consultations continued to increase in children aged 1 to 4 and 5 to 14 years.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 48, GP out-of-hours contacts for acute respiratory infections (ARI) continued to increase nationally and were above seasonally expected levels. Increases in ARI were particularly noted in children aged under 15 years. There was a further increase in contacts for influenza-like illness, with activity currently above seasonally expected levels. ILI contacts increased particularly in the 5 to 14 and 15 to 44 years age groups.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system
During week 48, acute respiratory infection attendances continued to increase nationally and remained above seasonally expected levels. ARI attendances increased across all age groups but particularly in children aged up to 14 years. Attendances for influenza-like illness also continued to increase and remained above expected levels. ILI attendances increased again most notably in children, but with activity also increasing across older age groups. Attendances for ‘acute bronchiolitis or bronchitis’ increased in the under 1s and 1 to 4 years age groups, but overall, attendances remained below seasonally expected levels.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system
During week 48, daily ambulance dispatch calls for ‘impact of heat or cold’ decreased and returned to expected levels. Calls for ‘difficulty breathing’ and ‘cardiac or respiratory arrest’ continued to increase in line with levels expected at this time of the year.
