During week 47 there were further increases in acute respiratory infection indicators across syndromic systems with activity particularly noted in children aged 1 to 4 and 5 to 14 years. Influenza-like illness (ILI) indicators also continued to increase again with increasing activity seen in children and with overall ILI activity remaining above seasonally expected levels. Acute bronchiolitis indicators increased during week 47, particularly in children aged less than 5 years, however activity remained below that expected for the time of year.

During week 47, the daily number of NHS 111 total triaged calls continued to increase in children aged under 15 years. There were also further increases observed in NHS 111 triaged calls and online assessments for acute respiratory infections (ARI), particularly in children aged 1 to 4 and 5 to 14 years, while ARI activity in adult age groups remained stable overall.

GP in-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 47 there were further increases in GP in-hours consultation rates for upper and lower respiratory tract infections with increases mainly observed in children aged 1 to 14 years. Consultation rates for influenza-like illness (ILI) increased overall with rates above expected levels for the time of year; ILI rates particularly increased in children aged 1 to 4 and 5 to 14 years. Bronchiolitis consultation rates also increased during week 47, particularly in children under the age of 5 years, but overall rates remained below seasonally expected levels.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 47, there was a further increase in GP out-of-hours contacts for acute respiratory infections nationally, which was in line with the seasonally expected trend; the increase was particularly noted in children aged 1 to 4 and 5 to 14 years where activity increased sharply over the last reporting week. Contacts for influenza-like illness increased further and remained above seasonally expected levels.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system
During week 47, ED attendances for acute respiratory infections (ARI) continued to increase nationally in line with expected trends. ARI attendances increased in children aged up to 14 years, but most noticeably in the 5 to 14 years age group. ED attendances for influenza-like illness (ILI) also increased, with increases seen across all age groups, but again particularly in children aged 5 to 14 years. There was a further increase in ‘acute bronchiolitis or bronchitis’ attendances during week 47, although activity currently remains below seasonally expected levels.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system
During week 47, ambulance dispatch calls for ‘impact of heat or cold’ increased, in line with an Amber Cold Weather Alert that was in place over parts of England during the reporting week.
