Reporting week 51: 15 to 21 December 2025
During week 51, syndromic surveillance indicators for acute respiratory infections (ARI) decreased nationally across syndromic systems. ED attendances for influenza-like illness (ILI) decreased across most age groups. GP in hours consultation rates for ILI started to decrease, though rates overall remained above levels expected for the time of year. There were further decreases observed in acute bronchitis or bronchiolitis indicators reported in the ED and GP out-of-hours systems.
Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system
During week 51, NHS 111 triaged calls and online assessments for acute respiratory infection (ARI) decreased nationally and with continued decreases in those aged under 45 years. However, ARI triaged calls increased in adults 45 years and over, whilst ARI online assessments increased for those aged 65 years and over. Indicators of both vomiting and diarrhoea decreased nationally, with decreases particularly in those aged under 45 years.

GP in-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 51 GP in hours consultation rates for upper respiratory tract infections decreased to expected levels nationally, however rates continued to increase in adults aged 65 years and over. Consultation rates for influenza-like illness (ILI) began to decrease nationally but remained above seasonally expected levels. Consultation rates for lower respiratory tract infections decreased slightly and are now below seasonally expected levels. Consultation rates for both diarrhoea and vomiting decreased.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 51, GP out-of-hours daily contacts for influenza-like illness decreased overall, with all age groups decreasing or stabilising. Daily acute respiratory infection contacts decreased slightly during the week, with decreases in all age groups except the 45 to 64 years age group where daily acute respiratory contacts continued to increase slightly. Acute bronchitis contacts continued to decrease in children under 5 years of age.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system
During week 51 there was a further decrease in emergency department attendances for acute respiratory infections (ARI) nationally. ARI attendances decreased across all age groups except in infants aged under 1 year and adults 45 years and over where activity remained stable overall. There was also a further decrease in influenza-like illness (ILI) attendances, with decreases across all age groups except for the under 1 year age group, where activity remained stable. Attendances for ‘acute bronchiolitis or bronchitis’ decreased further during week 51 and remained below seasonally expected levels. Attendances for pneumonia remained stable and below levels expected for the time of year.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system
During week 51, daily ambulance dispatch calls for ‘difficulty breathing’ were stable and consistent with seasonal expectations. Daily numbers of ambulance dispatch calls for ‘chest pain’ and ‘cardiac or respiratory arrest’ both decreased.
