During week 33, syndromic ‘impact of heat’-type indicators increased in line with the recent health heat alert. There was a continued small increase in COVID-19-like GP in-hours consultations, although the rise in emergency department (ED) COVID-like attendances broadly stabilised during the latter part of the week.

During week 33, NHS 111 triaged calls and online assessments for the ‘heat exposure or sunburn’ indicator increased in line with the recent heat health alert. Triaged calls and online assessments for insect bites also increased.

GP in-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 33 there was a continued gradual increase in COVID-19-like GP consultations nationally, particularly in adults aged 65 years and over. Other respiratory indicators were stable or decreased and were similar or below seasonally expected levels. Consultations for heat or sunstroke and insect bites increased in line with the warmer temperatures experienced across most of England.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 33, GP out-of-hours daily contacts for heat or sunstroke increased coinciding with an amber heat health alert. Contacts for gastroenteritis and diarrhoea stabilised but remain above seasonally expected levels.
Please note: trends for week 33 should be interpreted with caution; we are investigating a potential change in coding practice by one GP out-of-hours service provider during week 32 which may have impacted on national trends, causing small increases in some syndromic indicators.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system
During week 33, the increase in national ED COVID-19-like attendances broadly stabilised. ED attendances for heat or sunstroke increased, peaking on 12 August, before decreasing over the weekend.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system
During week 33, daily ambulance calls for ‘impact of heat or cold’ increased during the start of the week in line with the heat-health alert across England before decreasing towards the weekend. Calls for ‘unconscious or passing out’ increased during the week.
