Syndromic surveillance summary: 2 November 2025 week 44

During week 44, across syndromic surveillance systems acute respiratory infection indicators were in general stable and in line with expected seasonal levels, but with increased activity noted in children aged 1 to 4 years. Influenza-like illness (ILI) indicators remained above seasonally expected levels, with emergency department ILI attendances continuing to increase in the 1 to 4 and 15 to 44 years age groups, with smaller increases observed in adults aged 45 years and over.

During week 44, NHS 111 triaged calls for acute respiratory infections (ARI) remained stable overall and within expected levels for the time of year. ARI calls decreased slightly in children aged 5 to 14 years while there was a small increase in children aged under 1 year; other age groups remained stable.

GP in-hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 44, GP in-hours consultation rates for influenza-like illness were stable overall, but above seasonally expected levels and with further increases observed in the 1 to 4 years age group. Upper and lower respiratory tract infections remained stable and in line with expected levels overall, but with increases observed in the 1 to 4 years group. Consultations for pneumonia increased slightly during week 4, particularly in adults aged 65 years and over, but overall activity remained similar to seasonally expected levels.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 44, GP out-of-hours contacts for acute respiratory infections remained stable nationally but with increases noted in the 1 to 4 years age group. Influenza-like illness contacts increased slightly with more notable increases in the 1 to 4 and 15 to 44 years age groups.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system

During week 44, acute respiratory infection attendances continued to increase in line with seasonal expectations, particularly in children aged 1 to 4 years. ED attendances for influenza-like illness (ILI) continued to increase above seasonally expected levels. Of note, ILI attendances increased in the 1 to 4 and 15 to 44 years age groups, with smaller increases in adults aged 45 years and over, while attendances decreased in children aged 5 to 14 years. Attendances for acute bronchiolitis increased during week 44, particularly in the 1 to 4 years age group, however activity is currently below expected levels for the time of year.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system

During week 44, daily ambulance calls for difficulty breathing remained stable overall while there was an increase in calls for ‘cardiac or respiratory arrest’. There was a spike in calls for ‘overdose, ingestion or poisoning’ on 1 November, however calls decreased towards expected levels on the following day.
