Syndromic surveillance summary: 19 June 2025 week 24

During week 24, there has been a further small increase in COVID-19-like emergency department (ED) attendances and a small increase in GP in-hours consultation rates for COVID-19 like illness. There have been increases in heat-related indicators, in line with the recent warmer weather and within seasonally expected levels.

During week 24 NHS 111-triaged calls and online assessments for ‘heat exposure or sunburn’ and ‘insect bites’ indicators increased in line with the recent warm weather. NHS 111-triaged calls and online assessments for ‘eye problems’ continued to increase, in line with seasonal expectations.

GP in-hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 24, GP consultation rates for allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis increased, but remain just below seasonally expected levels. There was a small increase in consultations for COVID-19-like illness.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 24, GP out-of-hours contacts for the ‘heat or sunstroke’ indicator increased, in line with the recent warmer weather, but remain at baseline levels. Contacts for ‘insect bites’ increased but are within expected levels for this time of year. Contacts for ‘eye problems’ also increased slightly over the weekend in line with increases in grass pollen. Contacts for acute bronchitis and difficulty breathing, wheeze or asthma increased over the weekend (14 to 15 June) but remained stable overall and at expected levels.

Emergency department (ED) syndromic surveillance system

During week 24, there was another small increase in COVID-19-like ED attendances. Asthma attendances increased but are within expected levels. All other respiratory syndromic indicators remained either stable or decreased and are at levels expected for the time of year.

During week 24, ambulance calls for allergic reactions continued to increase.
