Reporting week 37: 8 September to 14 September 2025
During week 37 there were increases in acute respiratory infection indicators across all syndromic systems, particularly in children aged under 15 years, in line with expected seasonal trends. There were also increases observed in asthma and difficulty breathing indicators in children aged 1 to 4 and 5 to 14, in line with expected activity associated with the recent return to school after the summer holiday break. ED and GP in-hours bronchiolitis indicators increased in young children, again in line with seasonal expectations. ED and GP in-hours COVID-19-like indicators continued to increase during week 37, with further slow but steadily increasing activity.
Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system
During week 37 there was an increase in NHS 111 triaged calls for acute respiratory infections, with calls increasing particularly in children aged under 15 years. These increases were in line with seasonally expected trends, but activity was below seasonally expected levels.

GP in-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 37, the GP consultation rate for upper and lower respiratory tract infections increased in line with seasonal expectations; increases were noted in children aged under 15 years. There were also observed increases in bronchiolitis in children aged 1 to 4 years and acute presenting asthma in children aged 5 to 14 years. The consultation rate for impetigo remained above seasonally expected levels during week 37 with a further increase seen in the 5 to 14 years age group.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 37, GP out-of-hours daily contacts for acute respiratory infections increased in line with seasonally expected trends; increases were noted in children aged under 15 years. There was a sharp increase in contacts for difficulty breathing/wheeze/asthma, again seen in children, but particularly in the 5 to 14 years age group. The increase in difficulty breathing, wheezing or asthma is observed annually in September following the start of the school autumn term.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system
During week 37, acute respiratory infection attendances increased in line with seasonal expectations; increases were observed in children aged under 15 years. There was an increase in attendances for acute bronchiolitis in younger children (aged up to 4 years) and a further small increase in COVID-19-like attendances nationally. Asthma attendances increased again during week 37 with increases seen in the 1 to 4 and 5 to 14 years ages groups in line with expected annual activity associated with the start of the school autumn term.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system
During week 37, daily ambulance calls for difficulty breathing and ‘cardiac or respiratory arrest’ increased slightly in line with expected seasonal trends, but both remained below seasonally expected levels.
