During week 46, syndromic surveillance indicators of acute respiratory infection increased overall and in line with expected seasonal levels, mainly due to increases in child age groups (up to 14 years). Influenza-like illness (ILI) indicators also continued to increase and remain above seasonally expected levels. Indicators of acute bronchiolitis increased, as is expected at this time of year, though the level remains below the level expected.

During week 46 NHS 111 triaged calls for acute respiratory infection increased slightly due to increases in child age groups, particularly those aged 1 to 4 years. NHS 111 online assessments for acute respiratory infections (ARI) remained stable overall, though there was an increase in the 5 to 14 years age group (the youngest age group for whom data is received from this service).

GP in-hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 46, GP in-hours consultation rates for influenza-like illness increased, mainly in the 5 to 14 years age group - the overall consultation rate remains above seasonally expected levels. Upper respiratory tract infection consultation rates were stable. Bronchiolitis consultation rates increased, particularly in children under the age of 5 years.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 46, there was a continued increase in GP out-of-hours contacts for acute respiratory infection nationally, which was in line with the seasonally expected trend - the increase was particularly in children aged 1 to 14 years. Contacts for influenza-like illness further increased and remain above seasonally expected levels. There was also an increase in contacts for acute bronchitis or bronchiolitis, particularly in children aged 1 to 4 years.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system

During week 46, ED attendances for acute respiratory infection increased nationally, due to increases in child age groups up to 14 years. Acute bronchiolitis or bronchitis attendances increased, though the level remains below the seasonal expectation. ED attendances for influenza-like illness (ILI) continued to increase above seasonally expected levels.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system

During week 46, the call numbers for most indicators remained stable, including calls for difficulty breathing. There was, however, a continued decrease in calls for injuries throughout week 46 and a slight increase in calls for impact of heat or cold during the weekend of Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 November.
